History
The first recorded history of present Lakewood began in 1789 with the “Three Partners’ Mill,” an area running parallel with the present State Highway 88, in the area of the South branch of the Metedeconk River. In this area, three Skidmore brothers John, George and Henry, settled. These three brothers built a mill, and lumbering became the main source of income for Lakewood’s first settlers. The name Lakewood was chosen by the residents by vote in 1880. The village became known as a resort town, with many beautiful hotels, including Laurel-in-the-Pines and Lakewood Hotel, both of which opened in 1891. Starting in the 1920s, Lakewood began to change, as the hotels slowly closed and the town was forced to adapt to the times as its economy grew and industrial parks were created. On the horizon are improvements to the Garden State Parkway, construction of a first-class hotel, further redevelopment of the downtown area, and improvements to the Industrial Park, all of which will continue to keep Lakewood what its founders considered it two centuries ago: “The Garden Spot of the Garden State.”
